"Sunshine Skyway Bridge"
Completed
in 1987, the Sunshine Skyway is the world's longest cable-stayed concrete bridge.
Carrying I-275 across the mouth of Tampa Bay, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge allows
travelers to drive directly across the bay, a 20.53 mile, 26 minute drive, as
opposed to driving around the bay, a 66 mile, 1 hour 29 min drive. The bridge
is probably the best known of the several dozen cable-stayed bridges that have
been built in the United States since the late 1970s. Its popularity may be
due to its unique color. The bridges cables are painted a bright taxicab yellow
to represent the state of Florida.
In the fall of 2001, during routine inspection, it was found that one of the
536 vertical steel tendons that hold together the bridge's 76 hollow pillars
was in need of repair due to corrosion. This prompted the Florida department
of transportation to contract for the repair and maintenance of all 76 concrete
pillars.
Accu-Cut Concrete Service's Inc. was one of the companies contracted to complete
work on the bridge. Accu-Cut's role in the project was to core drill a series
of holes inside the bridge pillars to help improve water proofing. Accu-cut
Also drilled a series of holes to install two new stairways and used flat sawing
applications on areas of the bridge median in order to inspect the cable tie
backs.
